Mary Mitchell 1935 ~ 2011

Mary Elizabeth Southwick Mitchell, our angel wife and mother, passed quietly away on November 9, 2011 with her family and friends close by.
In 1998 she was diagnosed with cancer and was told she had only months to live. She absolutely refused to accept the prognosis, and valiantly fought and won numerous battles over the next 13 years. She lived every day to its fullest with optimism, laughter and hope. She loved, inspired and encouraged her family and everyone around her; she was the ultimate cheerleader.
Mary was born on November 19, 1935, to Mary Hansen Southwick and George Merlin Southwick, eight minutes before her beautiful identical twin sister, Margaret. Mary and Margaret grew up in Salt Lake City with their three handsome older brothers: Paul, Grant and Richard (Dick) Southwick. Mary and Margaret attended and graduated from East High School, then they went on to the University of Utah where Mary graduated in 1959 with a degree in Elementary Education.
Mary met Clark while she and Margaret were working at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon as waitresses in the lodge. Clark was a gear jammer, driving tourist buses through the National Parks. They planned their life together sitting on the rim of the Grand Canyon watching the sunsets.
Mary and Clark were married on March 26, 1958, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They loved each other and their children with an eternal love, and recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. She put the gospel of Jesus Christ into practice by serving as called and wherever she saw a need. She lived her testimony.
Mary is survived by her husband, Karl Clark Mitchell, all of her children - Carrie Lynn Mitchell, Russell Clark Mitchell, Bonnie Mitchell Jones (Paul), Kendall Southwick Mitchell (Colleen), Laurel Marie Mitchell - and her seven adored grandchildren - Riley, Parker, Micah, Alexandria, Ellie Marie, Jordan and Katherine.
We are so grateful for her and proud of her. We love her very much and will miss her until we are reunited once again.
